Taking Care of my Child’s Sensitive Skin

(AD: The Sanex Dermo Kids Bodywash was gifted by Colgate but all views and opinions are my own.)

Our daughter has incredibly sensitive skin. This comes as no surprise in the slightest considering I am atopic (the wonderful trio of asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis) and my husband is allergic to many different things. Our little one was bound to have some allergies somewhere along the line!

From a very young age, Evie came out in hives and rashes in reaction to certain skin products. We knew when she was a baby that even products labelled “suitable for babies and kids” were not always suitable for her. Even sun creams labelled as perfect for children, endorsed by various health professionals, would leave her with a horrible itchy looking rash for days after.

Unsurprisingly, this has meant a great deal of trial and error in finding not only the best skin care brands for her skin, but which specific bubble baths work for her, which sun creams work best, and which things are complete no-gos.

There are a handful of products which she can handle, each of which I’ll recommend below as I’m sure there are plenty of parents out there in our position.

Sanex Dermo Kids Bodywash

This is the product I was asked to review by Colgate, and amazingly is the one bubble bath we already use.

We started using this product, the Sanex Dermo Kids Bodywash, around a year ago. I was initially sceptical about it as I spotted perfume in the ingredients list. Perfumed products are a definite no-no for both my daughter’s and my own skin.

But this product is different. The perfume is slight enough to not cause her (or me) any problems. It cleans her skin perfectly. Yes, even the felt-tips and paints she’s decided to use on herself come off brilliantly.

Many of the bath foams, bubble baths, whatever you want to call them, out there dry out a person’s skin. But the Sanex Dermo Kids Bodywash doesn’t. It leaves her skin nicely soft at the end of her bath without the need for a layer of moisturiser afterwards.

But what would a bubble bath product review be without a comment on its bubble producing properties? Which toddler out there doesn’t love a proper bubbly bubble bath? We all know how important those bubble beards and bubble hats are in bath-time entertainment. The Sanex Dermo Kids Bodywash does this perfectly. Plenty of bubbles get produced at each and every bath-time and I assure you, it’s a complete hit in this household.

Oilatum Cream

This Oilatum cream is an emollient, suitable for eczema and itchy dry skin conditions. It’s the only moisturising product suitable for my own skin so I use it on Evie’s too.

Particularly after days in the sun, Evie’s skin needs a good layer of moisturiser. She is partial to a heat rash even with pretty much the entire time spent in the shade, covered up and kept cool. Any rash is generally sorted with the Oilatum cream.

Currently in the midst of a global pandemic, we are asked to wash our hands frequently and use a hand sanitiser when hand washing facilities are not available. Over the course of the UK pandemic, Evie’s and my skin have dried out considerably and I’m pretty sure there are many others out there in the same position. We have several bottles of Oilatum around our house, always on hand when we need it!

Oilatum also produce several other products, including a Bath Additive and the Junior Cream.

Ambre Solaire Kids Sensitive Advanced Factor 50

We’ve always been incredibly lucky with our daughter in terms of sun cream. She LOVES, I repeat LOVES, having her sun cream put on. Lucky that seeing as her sensitive skin very much needs it!

The product we use for her is the Ambre Solaire Kids Sensitive Advanced Factor 50. We tried every brand going, particularly the own brand products, as sun cream doesn’t seem to be cheap!  But each and every one, apart from the Ambre Solaire, brought Evie out in the most horrible looking rashes.

Once we found this one product that does agree with her skin, we stuck with it. Like the Oilatum Cream above, we have several of these bottles of Ambre Solaire Kids Sensitive Advanced around the house! I honestly don’t understand how this stuff goes missing but it does. Inevitably, there’s one bottle left in the car, one in the pram and one hidden behind a chest of drawers.

But back to the product itself, it is a gentle sun cream, absorbs into the skin nicely, and of course has the UVA, UVB and Long UVA protection. Definitely recommend!
